Today Daphne and I got together all the paintings we think may go into our HB Punto Experimental gallery exhibition. We set panels and canvases up all over the front of our studio, where the light is best. And amazingly, it looks like a show. Of course, it will be even better when placed in relation to sculptures by two other artists: Hugo Heredia, whose wire and glass work will mainly hang from the ceiling, and Miya Hannan, who will do floor and pedestal pieces of cement and resin. Our paintings for the exhibition, tentatively called “Trapped Reflections,” are from our Elements Series, with the possible addition of a few Florals that may somehow fit. The work is not easy--it's gothic with a sort of rancid beauty. The whole show will hopefully look like it smells of decay. Hugo, Miya, Daphne and I will meld the space into a seamless, dark installation, invoking nature through artificial materials. At least, that's the plan! The show will open on September 3, 2016 at HB Punto Experimental, 2151 Logan Ave., San Diego.
It's that time of year! The Beverly Hills ArtSHOW is Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22, 10am to 6pm. Free and a great place to bring the whole family.
We will be showing our original paintings, including large Florals, our new "Bug Twister" series, and affordable embellished prints. We will also be demonstrating our collaborative technique. Please come by and chat with us! We are at Space #313, on Canon Dr. at Santa Monica Blvd. There is free parking in several places around the park. We are near the gourmet coffee truck, the bathrooms, and the wine bar--convenient! Hill&Stump was invited by curator Kio Griffith to contribute to an exhibition of Japanese Shunga (erotic) reinterpretations at the Japan Foundation in Los Angeles. In her review of the exhibition, in which our work given top billing, Priscilla Frank writes the following:
Artists Daphne Hill and Anna Stump transform a Katsukawa Shunsho print into a three-dimensional collage, replacing stark flatness with layers of newspaper, butterflies, gold lace and an artfully placed octopus. The image, a depiction of a master and his servant, is at once feminine and rough, its jagged-edge girliness a contemporary response to shunga’s questionable male aristocratic origins. We are so complimented to have been included in this smart exhibition. Read the full article here. Spring is here and we're as busy as bees. We have a solo exhibition at the Laemmle Claremont Theater in the lobby. So grateful to have the Laemmle family as supporters and collectors. The show in the lobby of the theater, and our video "trailer," will be up through the Spring. Next up is the Brewery Artwalk, April 2 and 3, 11am to 6pm. We are at 2020 No. Main St., #235. Please come by and say hi. We've got some new works.
In May we will once again be showing at the Beverly Hills ArtSHOW, space #313, right by the coffee, wine bar, and bathroom (so convenient!). At both the Brewery and Beverly Hills we chose two paintings to heavily discount. Who knows, it might be one you love! All events free and open to the public. We are pleased that Sonya Sparks chose eight of our paintings for her current exhibition, "Verdant." Sparks Gallery is at 530 Sixth Avenue in the Gaslamp District of Downtown San Diego. "Verdant" runs January 16 through March 13, 2016.
Come on out to "The Big House at the Glashaus," an exhibition of prisoner artwork at the Glashaus Mainspace Gallery, open Thursday, December 31 through Sunday, January 17.
Sunday, January 3 3:00-6:00 pm: Reception 4:00-5:00 pm: Panel discussion and Q&A with Founding Director Laura Pecenco and Artist-Instructors Kathleen Mitchell, Anna Stump, and Daphne Hill from 4-5 pm Free! The Glashaus is at 1815 Main Street in Barrio Logan, San Diego. All works featured were created by prisoners at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Project PAINT: The Prison Arts INiTiative (projectpaint.org), a visual arts program that partners with the William James Association to offer Arts-in-Corrections programming to California prison inmates. Funding is provided by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in conjunction with the California Arts Council. We are delighted to be represented by Sergott Contemporary Art Alliance at Spectrum Miami Art Fair, December 2-6, booth #909. We are there in spirit!
